This was the first project in tourism sponsored by the Center for Latin American Competitiveness & Sustainable Development (CLACDS), an initiative of the Presidents of the Central American countries, BCIE and Avina Foundation. La Paz Group founder Dr. Crist Inman worked with public and private sector leaders using “Cluster” methodology—the first time Michael Porter’ model was adapted and applied to tourism. The hallmark “No Artificial Ingredients” campaign—highlighting the country’s commitment to conservation—was the first breakthrough success of this project. Also, the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program was established during these years and Dr. Inman served on its founding Board of Directors. The successes of these initiatives helped legitimize the sustainable development model in this and other countries.
